Connecting the countries in the Baltic Sea
By 2030, offshore wind farms of three gigawatts will deliver power to Denmark, Sweden and Germany via the island of Bornholm. The estimated capacity of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea is up to 93 gigawatts in total. The electricity will power homes and companies and it will be converted into hydrogen through power-to-x to produce green fuels for the transport sector.
Denmark has been a frontrunner in the green transition. Building on global cooperation we have developed the technologies, implemented it in our energy system and exported it to the rest of the world. Baltic Energy Island will continue this tradition taking us closer to 100 percent sustainable and data driven energy system.

Danmarks Erhvervsfremmebestyrelse har d. 22. nov. 2023 offentliggjort, at det bornholmske erhvervsfyrtårn, Baltic Energy Island tildeles yderligere 8 mio. kr. Den nye bevilling kommer oveni to bevillinger fra foråret, og konsortiet har nu mulighed for at igangsætte projektaktiviteter for i alt 30,6 mio. kr., hvoraf Danmarks Erhvervsfremmebestyrelse bidrager med 18,8

Leading the way for local development
The Danish Parliament has decided to establish Bornholm as the world’s first energy island.
Located at the center of 93 GW of potential offshore wind power and global shipping routes, with more than 60.000 ships passing annually, Bornholm has the potential to be a green power hub for the Baltic Sea. Baltic Energy Island is created to fulfill this potential.
Through a coordinated effort, our partnership will develop technology,
foster innovation, teach students and inspire business development.
